LeanShips Project to Prove Effectiveness of Green Technologies

Damen Shipyards Group, the ship building giants has launched a new project titled “The European Innovation Project LeanShips – Low Energy And Near To Zero Emissions Ships” at the company’s headquarters in Gorinchem, the Netherlands.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of energy saving and emission reduction technologies at real scale. LeanShips are one of the first projects funded under the new European Research and Innovation Framework Program named “Horizon 2020”.

The Process of Hazardous Cargo Acceptance and Shipment

In this post, lets go through the actual process of how the hazardous cargo approval process works with the lines and port.

How to know if a shipping container is in good condition…

Shipping containers, both new and used, translate to big money and competition is strong. With people looking to other sources for business structures, they are turning to shipping containers.  They are using the shipping containers for everything from workshops to even living spaces. The containers are affordable, lower labor costs and are durable. Before jumping in with both feet however, you have to make sure that the container is in the proper condition.  Not all shipping containers are the same.  Here are some tips to follow when thinking about buying a containers:

The Less You Burn, The More You Earn

Within the maritime shipping industry recently are, among other things, the effects of shipping on the environment, emissions reduction, political regulations in shipping areas, and a lifetime improvement of vessels and cutting back fuel prices. There are eleven companies and institutes from six European countries that have collaborated in a three-year project that took a closer look at a solution for these matters.

Why is the Ship Incident Rate Steady Despite New Technology ?

“Of all the systems on board a vessel, a human being is the most complex, and perhaps the most difficult one to integrate into a system of safer transportation.” -Tracy Murrell, Director, Office of Marine Safety, National Transportation Safety Board.

Satellite Technology Helps Ships Stay Out of Trouble

The Compliance Assistance Program (CAP) developed by the Liberian Registry which is also satellite based, has developed a plan to ensure regulatory compliance and prevent detentions in some of the world’s most active Port State Control (PSC) areas.

The CAP tracks ships when they have entered various jurisdictions. Once tracking starts the registries risk analysis team can perform detailed reviews of vessels, including their history, and the ports at which they are calling.

THE GLOBAL SHIPPING REVOLUTION STARTED IN AMERICA

Truck drivers have a lot of time to think of new and imaginative ways to make their lives on the road easier, right? But did you know that the man who invented shipping containers, which in turn shaped the entire history of shipping and transportation, was a truck driver from North Carolina?

Are Unmanned Vessels the Future of Global Shipping?

There seems to be a lot of buzz going around about drones and unmanned ships within the shipping industry. We understand there are a lot of positives and negatives to unmanned shipments, so we decided to highlight them.

According to a presentation by Clamber University of Technology, Human error is one of the biggest contributing factors for maritime accidents around the world. So less accidents is one of the biggest benefits of unmanned ships. Check out these statistics below on the percentage of accidents caused by human error:

Global Shipping Losses Down in 2014, But New Risks Could be Emerging

Global shipping losses for 2014 may be down once again, but mega ships and cyber attacks are emerging as risks and pose a threat to the maritime sector. With 75 total losses reported worldwide in 2014, it makes 2014 the safest year to ship in 10 years. The loss numbers have even declined by 50% since 2005! The United States eastern seaboard region did not register a total loss for the second consecutive year, and the North American west coast region also did not see a total loss in 2014.
